Report on Afghan SIV Program – Senator Shaheen

SIV report Senator Sheheen

A report about the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program has been released by Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH). Dated September 22, 2022, the 40-page PDF provides information on the history, challenges, and the future of the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa program.

Senator Shaheen has historically led action in the United States Senate on efforts to reform and improve the Afghan SIV program. Her efforts in this area were initially in partnership with the late Senator John McCain (R-AZ). This comprehensive report begins with a description of the program at its inception, through the withdrawal from Afghanistan, to its current implementation.

The publication details systemic issues with the SIV program and proposes policy changes to better serve our Afghan allies. Shaheen says that the Afghan SIV program was an important mechanism to repay the efforts of the Afghan allies who assisted the United States during its 20-year involvement in the Afghan conflict. However, the program has not lived up to the expectations that many had hoped for.
